PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for measuring material distribution in the plate thickness direction of a thick steel plate by online quickly in the manufacture line of a steel plate. SOLUTION: In the material testing method of the steel plate, on a shear plane at the tail end of the steel plate or the shear plane of a steel plate segment corresponding to the tail end shear plane, Vickers hardness is measured at a plurality of points in the plate thickness direction and the hardness distribution in the plate thickness direction is used for determining the material distribution, such as tensile strength in the plate thickness direction of the steel plate, yield strength, and the amount of expansion. Additionally, in the manufacture line of the steel plate, the material testing apparatus of the steel plate comprises a Vichers hardness measuring apparatus that approaches the shear plane of the steel plate and can be retracted; a camera for photographing an indentation stamped by the apparatus; an image processing apparatus for reading the size of the photographed indentation; and an arithmetic unit for calculating the hardness from the size of the indentation and at the same time for calculating the quality of material, such as the tension strength, yield strength, and the amount of extension, from the hardness.
