摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal optical element in which transmittance is varied while a low scattering state is maintained by varying an applied voltage and to use it as an aperture for an optical device. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal-polymer composite containing a dichroic dye, a liquid crystal and a polymer is used as the liquid crystal optical element. The transmittance is varied along a transmittance curve 10 by varying the voltage applied to an electrode. The transmittance T<SB>H</SB>at a high transmission state and the transmittance T<SB>L</SB>at a low transmission state are made to be≥45% and≤40% respectively. Further the liquid crystal optical element is used in a state in which scattering transmittance T<SB>d</SB>is≤20% and in a region T<SB>10</SB>between the high transmission state and the low transmission state wherein a transmittance ratio K<SB>HL</SB>is kept≥1.2.
