There is provided an information processing apparatus which has the versatility of allowing connection to an external device and can easily transfer digital information from one recording medium to another recording medium. When an external MO drive is connected to an external device such as a personal computer, the drive can transmit/receive digital information to/from the device. When a copy button is operated while the personal computer is not connected to the drive, the drive can read out image files from a memory card inserted in a PC card slot portion and write the files in an MO disk inserted in an MO disk slot portion. This therefore facilitates backup of files.
