<p><PICT:0801315/III/1> In a method of contacting solid particles with fluids, especially gaseous fluids, a jet of gas is directed vertically upwardly through a mass of the particles contained in an open-topped cylindrical vessel 1 having a bottom section 2 in the form of an inverted cone to form a well-defined, continuous, relatively rapid upward spout 6 of solid particles, the remainder of the particles having a slow downward motion and continuously migrating to and being upwardly spouted in said spout at all levels so that the mass is in continuous motion. The gas enters by a pipe 4 having a screen 5 to prevent solid particles entering the pipe. For continuous operation the vessel would have a solids inlet pipe and an overflow pipe.</p> |
