PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyester polymerization catalyst which is mainly composed of a component other than an antimony compound and a germanium compound and excellent in catalytic activities and gives a polyester excellent in thermal stability, thermal oxidation stability and hydrolysis resistance, and to provide a polyester excellent in thermal stability, thermal oxidation stability and hydrolysis resistance. SOLUTION: The polyester polymerization catalyst comprises at least one selected from aluminum and an aluminum compound as a metal-containing component in the co-existence of at least one selected from a phosphorous compound bearing at least one P-OH bond.
