PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow more accurate friction separation of printing paper in a friction separation system without increasing the friction coefficient of a friction separation material. SOLUTION: A separation pad 35 is provided in opposition to a paper feed roller 3 for friction separation of paper being held between the paper feed roller 3 and the separation pad 35. Paper guide members 11 each having a guide face 12 and a paper end abutting face 14 are arranged on both sides of the separation pad 35. A paper entry port formed by an angular portion 14 where the guide face 12 and the paper end abutting face 14 intersect each other and an outer peripheral face (the arcuate face) of the paper feed roller 3 is formed to be in an approximately blocked condition. A hopper 5 is pressed against the paper feed roller 5 to elastically deform the paper feed roller 3 at its outer peripheral face, thereby permitting the opening of the paper entry port formed by the angular portion 14 and the outer peripheral face of the paper feed roller 3.
