<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive recording device which carries out detection and replacement of an ink cartridge surely by an inexpensive configuration and does not consume ink wastefully. <P>SOLUTION: The recording device detects opening of an access cover 1. After a carrier means is moved by a carrier driving means to an opening part of the cover 1, the user manually moves the carrier means to an ink replacement position and replaces the ink cartridge.
