PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color image processing apparatus and a color image processing method capable of suppressing image quality deterioration and reducing a data capacity used for the image processing to relieve a load of the image processing. SOLUTION: A signal selecting/correcting section 123 accepts any one of a monochromatic mode for processing a monochromatic image, a color mode for processing a color image, and an automatic mode for automatically discriminating the modes by means of a discrimination means, which one is selected as a signal from a control panel 121. In the monochromatic mode, the signal selecting/correcting section 123 outputs an image signal sensed by a high resolution sensor section 111 to a processing system 124, the high resolution sensor section 111 sensing an image received not via a color separation filter for separating colors of an image signal on the basis of optical chromatic characteristics. In the color mode, an image signal sensed and selected by a low resolution sensor section 112 for sensing an image received via the color separation filter for separating colors of the image signal on the basis of the optical chromatic characteristics, correction is applied to the image on the basis of the image signal sensed by the high resolution sensor 111 as required and the result is outputted to the processing system 124.
