PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To establish a method of producing polyacetylene having novel properties by improving the structural characteristics and controlling the structure of polyacetylene polymer chains when polyacetylene is produced. SOLUTION: The acetylene polymerization initiator comprises a titanium-carbene complex represented by general formula (1) or general formula (2) [L is cyclopentadienyl, pentamethylcyclopentadienyl or indenyl group; Y is an alkyl, an aralkyl, aryl, heteraryl or -OR', -SR' or -NR'R" (R' and R" are each an alkyl, an aralkyl, an aryl, a heteraryl and R' and R" represent each an alkyl, an aralkyl, an aryl or a heteraryl or they may bond mutually to form a ring); L in the general formula (2) has the same meaning as in the formula (1); n is an integer of≥2; Z represents an n-valent organic group].
