PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an illumination optical system which is compact, has a high illumination efficiency and attains a bright uniform illumination by arranging an auxiliary light source part for emitting luminous flux so as to compensate the luminous flux for a luminous flux low density part near the center of the luminous flux from a main light source part equipped with a reflector and a 1st integrator part having two fly-eye lenses, and to obtain a projection type display device using the illumination optical system. SOLUTION: The illumination optical system is equipped with a main light source part 1 equipped with a parabolic mirror reflector 12, an auxiliary light source part 2 for emitting the luminous flux so as to compensate the luminous flux for the luminous flux low density part of the luminous flux emitted from the light source part 1, a deflection mirror 3, a 1st integrator part 4 realizing the uniformization of the light quantity distribution of the luminous flux from the light source part 1 by two fly-eye lenses 15 an 16 and a 2nd integrator part 5 realizing the uniformization of the light quantity distribution of the luminous flux from the light source part 2 by a rod integrator 36. Then, condensing lenses 37 and 38 are formed at the center parts of the two fly-eye lenses 15 and 16. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
