PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device with which picture quality is improved by prevention of motional blurring and additionally picture display easy-to-see for a user is easily realized by display luminance modulation by controlling intermittent driving of a backlight light source based on external light illuminance. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device prevents the motional blurring produced in moving picture displaying by writing a picture signal for a vertical interval to be displayed in a liquid crystal display panel 1 and by intermittently turning on the backlight light source 3 during one vertical interval, and is provided with a detection means 7 of external light illuminance for surroundings in use of the device and a means 5 to variably control a turned on time period of the backlight light source 3 based on the detected external light illuminance.
