PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas discharge tube where the startability in a dark place can be improved, and to provide its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: In a gas discharge tube 1, a pair of electrodes 5, 6 are adjacently provided in a glass bulb 2 which gas is sealed in, and a dielectric member 10 consisting of ceramics including magnesium oxide is extended between the electrodes 5, 6. A distance between the electrodes 5, 6 in a stem 3 is bigger than that between through holes 11, 12 in the dielectric member 10 and thus each electrode 5, 6 is welded with pressure to the inside of an opening on one end face 10a side of the through holes 11, 12. As a result, when a voltage is applied between the electrodes 5, 6, initial electrons for starting discharge are surely supplied in the neighborhood of discharge parts 13, 14. Thus, even if metal oxide as a dielectric such as magnesium oxide is not directly applied to the electrodes 5, 6, the startability in a dark place can be improved. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
