PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for detecting and/or correcting defects caused by non-repeatable run-out (NRRO) of a data storage device. SOLUTION: By sensing and/or removing the impairment frequency related to the mechanical excitation in a narrow frequency band of an actuator control signal generated by a controller 70 of the data storage device, mechanical excitation in a narrow frequency band related to the defects of a spindle bearing 12 is detected and/or corrected. A narrow frequency band filter 80 is used to remove the impairment frequency, which is set near a zero-crossing frequency, related to the defects of the spindle bearing 12 and the controller from the actuator control signal generated by the controller 70. In addition, a peak filter 88, which is placed in a control loop 72, detects the defects 18 of the spindle bearing 12 by detecting the amplitude of a control loop control signal near the impairment frequency related to the defects of the spindle bearing 12.
