PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve operability in inputting a character and visibility to a screen displaying an input candidate character when the character is inputted. SOLUTION: A portable terminal device is provided with a first jog dial 20 arranged at nearly the same distance from the both sides on a main operation face and a second jog dial 33 arranged at nearly the same distance from both sides on the rear side of the operation face. A UI screen used when inputting a character has a first character display position for displaying the character inputted by depressing the first jog dial and second to fifth character display positions located on the front, rear, left and right sides of the first character display position for displaying four characters which neighbors the first character at the front, rear, left and right of the Japanese syllabary table of the character. The input candidate character displayed at the first character display position on the UI screen is sequentially changed in accordance with the rotational operation of the both jog dials 20 and 33, and the four characters neighboring the first character at the front, rear, left and right of the input candidate character thus changed on the Japanese syllabary table are allocated to the second to fifth character display positions.
