PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce and/or eliminate deposition of sludge formed by freezing and ice-stuffing in valve assemblies and the reaction of stored crankcase gas with engine oil. SOLUTION: The flow of gas through passages 60, 62 and 64 between an engine crankcase 54 and an engine intake manifold 24 is controlled by valve assemblies 42, 44, 46, and 48. When a temperature of the gas is below a predetermined value, a flow of gas through the passages 60, 62, and 64 between the crankcase 54 and the intake manifold 24 is increased.
