<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing apparatus and a manufacturing method to industrially efficiently synthesize high-purity carbon nanotubes, in particular, to properly control the length of the obtained carbon nanotubes. <P>SOLUTION: The manufacturing apparatus of carbon nanotubes is equipped with at least: two electrodes 11, 12 with the top ends opposing to each other; a power supply 18 to apply a voltage between the electrodes 11, 12 to generate discharge plasma in the discharge region between the electrodes 11, 12; and magnetism generating members 21, 22 to generate at least a magnetic field having diverging magnetic force lines or a magnetic field having a component parallel to the propagation direction of the discharge current, in the region where the discharge plasma is produced; and further with cooling means 30, 36, 38 for the magnetism generating member to cool the magnetism generating members 21, 22. Carbon nanotubes are manufactured by cooling the magnetism generating members by using the cooling means 30, 36, 38 for the magnetism generating member. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
