A method of alleviating dry eyes and a composition therefor is provided, where the composition contains a gonadal steroid and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. In another method of alleviating dry eyes, the gonadal steroid binds to testosterone-aa-reductase at a lower affinity than testosterone.
