<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the luminous efficiency of a LED having a light emitting element composed of a gallium nitride-based compound semiconductor material and, in addition, to improve the luminance of the diode. <P>SOLUTION: The light emitting diode has the light emitting element disposed on the bottom face of a metal recess, and a resin surrounding the light emitting element. The element is composed of a gallium nitride-based compound semiconductor laminated in both n- and p-types. In the resin, a fluorescent dye or pigment which emits light having a wavelength longer than an excitation wavelength by exciting the light emitted from the light emitting element is added.
