PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem of large striking noise generated by a timing chain colliding with a chain guide when the timing chain is loosened in a DOHC engine. SOLUTION: In an internal combustion engine, the timing chain 7 is stretched around sprockets 5 and 6 installed on an intake camshaft 2 and an exhaust camshaft 4 rotatably installed in a cylinder head 8 to drive the intake camshaft 2 and the exhaust camshaft 4. It is provided with a first timing chain guide 101 to restrict upward move of the timing chain 7 when it passes through the sprockets 5 and 6, and a second timing chain guide 104 disposed to hold the first timing chain guide and the timing chain 7 to get in contact with the timing chain passing between the sprockets 5 and 6 when it is loosened downward for parting loosening of the timing chain 7 between the sprockets 5 and 6 at least in half.
