PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new material having water fixed basically in the form of bound water to thereby impart such advantages inherent in materials in the natural world as to antistatic properties and prevention of the deposition of dust. SOLUTION: The new material comprises a composite material derived from a three-dimensional crosslinked metal oxide containing bound water and is characterized in that it contains water fixed in the form of a bound water. It is a bulk material containing a bound water and is obtained by subjecting a metal alkoxide to hydrolysis and polycondensation in the presence of a water-absorptive polymer.
