<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To encode a character symbol pattern, particularly a kanji pattern including horizontal and vertical line segments, at a high compression rate. <P>SOLUTION: In the case of encoding the kanji pattern by one line at a time, FBE compression encoding is applied to the vertical line segments, and a 1-bit code RLon or RLoff denoting whether or not a horizontal line segment exists is attached to the head of the vertical lines. In the case of the code RLoff, an ordinary FBE compression code word is used as it is, and in the case of the code RLon, an RL (run length) compression code is attached as shown in an 'RL area'. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
