PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means for mass-producing the monocylic carotenoid occurring only in minute amounts in the natural world.

SOLUTION: A gene encoding an enzyme playing the role of synthesizing γ-carotene as a carotenoid serving as the key of synthesizing various monocyclic carotenoids is provided. The method for producing the various monocyclic carotenoids including γ-carotene using microorganisms where the gene is transferred and expressed is also provided.
