PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that the operation for selecting contents to be compressed is complicated in a conventional recording and reproducing apparatus when compressing a plurality of the recorded contents. SOLUTION: This recording and reproducing apparatus is provided with a content recording means for recording the plurality of the contents inputted from the outside on a recording medium with identification information so as to identify them for each content; a group reference setting means for setting a group reference for grouping the plurality of the contents recorded on the recording medium into prescribed groups; a grouping means which sorts and groups the plurality of the contents recorded on the recording medium based on the identification information into the respective prescribed groups according to the set group reference; and a compressing means for compressing the plurality of the contents recorded in the recording medium by each grouped group.
