PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector capable of securing complete cooling efficiency even when it is used in highland without causing the steep rise of product cost. SOLUTION: The projector is equipped with a light source and an optical modulator 441 modulating luminous flux emitted from the light source in accordance with image information so as to form an optical image, and enlarges and projects the optical image formed by the modulator 441. The projector is equipped with cooling mechanisms 71 and 81 cooling the inside of the projector including the light source and/or the modulator 441 and a cooling control selection means 506 selectively setting the driving control of the cooling mechanism in accordance with the altitude of the place where the projector is used. Since the projector is equipped with the selection means 506, the driving control of the cooling mechanism is selectively set in accordance with the altitude of the place where the projector is used.
