PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method by which soil contaminated with an organochlorine compound including not only soil in a saturation band at an underground water level or less but also excavated soil can be detoxified at relatively low cost with an addition of a smaller quantity of a single iron material compared with that added in a conventional method in a short time and at normal temperature. SOLUTION: Upon treatment for detoxifying soil, the method is carried out by addition and mixing by means of, for example, spraying iron powder as a reducing agent into the soil in the earth together with a high pressure medium or mechanically mixing the iron powder with the soil utilizing construction machinery or the like. In this case, preferably the iron powder contains 0.1 wt.% or more carbon, has a particle size such that 50 ut.% or more thereof pass through a 150μm mesh sieve, has 500 cm<SP>2</SP>/g or more of a specific surface area, and is added to the soil in the 0.1 to 10 wt.% range. Furthermore, by the use of sponge-like iron powder as the iron powder, efficient detoxifying treatment can be carried out. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
