<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus having a structure that improves efficiency in removing impurities left on an image carrier without making the structure complicated and prevents the interior of the apparatus from being soiled or damaged during the removal. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 1 includes a cleaning device 7 for removing toner, paper dust, and other impurities left on an image carrier after transfer, with a cleaning member. In the image forming apparatus 1, the cleaning member 9 has the structure 100 in which the contact pressure of the member 9 on the surface of the image carrier can be varied and the member 9 remains in contact with the image carrier with pressure equal to or lower than contact pressure that enables scraping of the impurities before and after the stop of the image carrier after image formation. The image carrier 2 is once driven in a direction that is the reverse to the direction of the movement assigned to image formation before it is operated for image formation and then stopped.
