PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic camera improving operability so that a user can simply grasps time and labor required for the reproduction of already recorded images, arranging image file positions in a medium so as to extremely simply detect them and saving the area of a display part. SOLUTION: A recording control means records an image signal which is processed by image pickup processing in a sub-directory constituted so that its name set in the recording medium includes a fixed part and serial numbers as an image file, automatically prepares the file name of the image file recorded in the recording medium by alphabets corresponding to upper digits of the file name and numerals corresponding to the lower digits and imparts an extender to the image file. Whether the image file can be reproduced by the electronic camera or not is determined on the basis of the extender concerned with the recorded file of the recording medium, whether the recorded file of the recording medium can be reproduced by the electronic camera or not is determined on the basis of the header information of the file and a display part is used for both of a display part for the number of recordable images and a display part for the number of reproducible images in common.
