PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing, under mild conditions, 4-t-butylcyclohexyl acetate containing much cis-form useful as a perfume. SOLUTION: The method comprises hydrogenating 4-t-butylphenol in the presence of a rhodium catalyst and a solvent and in the coexistence of hydrogen chloride to obtain 4-t-buthylhexanol and acetylating the obtained 4-t-buthylhexanol to produce 4-t-buthylcyclohexyl acetate, wherein the rhodium catalyst is obtained by supporting metallic rhodium or a rhodium compound on a carrier, the coexistent hydrogen chloride is 0.05-10 mol based on 1 mol rhodium atom in the rhodium catalyst.
