The synthetic peptide having chaperone activity is characterized by having an amino acid sequence: Ile-Ser-X<SB>2</SB>-Gly-Ser-Gly-X<SB>3</SB>-Thr-Trp-Ser-Asn-X<SB>4</SB>-Tyr (X<SB>2</SB>, X<SB>3</SB>and X<SB>4</SB>are each Asp, Glu or Arg) at at least one part. The method for measuring the decarbonation activity of a peptide comprises adding the above-described peptide to a peptide having Lys-Thr-Asn-Met-Lys-His-Met-Ala-Gly-Ala-Ala-Ala-Ala-Gly-Ala-Val-Val-Gly-Gly-Leu-Gly originating from the amino acid sequence of a prion protein at at least one part.
