PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an optical fiber preform by outside vapor phase deposition. SOLUTION: The method for producing an optical fiber preform by outside vapor phase deposition comprises producing an optical fiber preform 1 by spraying soot of a desired raw material gas from a burner 6 traversing near a central member of the optical fiber preform 1 which is rotatably supported at both ends 1A and 1B thereof respectively by bearings and rotated. The both ends 1A and 1B are rotatably driven by a first motor A1 and a second motor M2 respectively. A desired target velocity value is inputted into the first motor M1. A deviation angle between a first rotation angle-detecting device 21 and a second rotation angle-detecting device 22 provided at both ends 1A and 1B respectively is detected. A modified tracking velocity value, which is obtained by conducting proportional/integral correction for the target velocity value using the deviation angle, is inputted into the second motor M2 to achieve a synchronized rotation of the first motor M1 and the second motor M2.
