PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal back projection type picture display device of a single plate system in which brightness and color purity are made compatible, which is made compact and high-focus, whose picture plane distortion is restrained to be little and whose contrast performance is drastically improved. SOLUTION: A lens device for projection having brightness equivalent to F 1.5 and constituted of three groups adopts constitution where video generating sources are directly coupled through cooling liquid, and is provided with 1st to 3rd dichroic mirrors DM1, DM2 and DM3 color-separating white illuminating light in such order as red, blue and green.
