The invention relates to a two-cylinder, two-stroke internal combustion engine with free opposed pistons, said engine comprising at least two alternately fired cylinders (1, 2) which are successively arranged on the same axis, are respectively connected to a fuel supply (16, 17), and respectively contain a pair of pistons (3, 4) which can be displaced back and forth in an opposing manner and respectively defines a combustion chamber in the cylinder (1, 2). The pistons (3.1, 4.2; 3.2, 4.1) moving in respectively the same direction are interconnected in a rigid manner and are actively connected to an energy converter (7) by means of the connections (5, 6) thereof. A sensor system (25, 26) is provided for at least one pair of pistons (3) and is used to collect data on the position, movement, working frequency, and speed of the pistons (3.1, 3.2), and a regulating device (25) associated with the sensor system (26) is used to regulate the operation according to the collected data. Furthermore, each cylinder (1, 2) is provided, on one end, with a plurality of inlets (8.1, 8.2; 9.1, 9.2), which are distributed in at least one row on the circumference thereof, form an inlet plane (8, 9), and are connected to an inlet channel arrangement (10, 11), and on the other end, with a plurality of outlets (18, 19), which are distributed on the circumference thereof, and are connected to an exhaust gas channel arrangement (20, 21). The fuel supply (16, 17) to the cylinders (1, 2) respectively runs into the region of the inlet plane (8, 9). |
