A method for detecting bursts in a telecommunication system

A method for detecting transmitted bursts in a telecommunication system wherein data blocks are transmitted in bursts and training sequences are transmitted in association with said data blocks, operation of the system being affected by signal impairment sources. The method includes the steps of: determining a first power level parameter (Pu) indicative of the power associated to a received training sequence, determining a second power level parameter indicative of power associated to the impairment sources (Pn), combining the first (Pu) and second (Pn) power level parameters to generate a combined power parameter ( alpha ), defining at least one threshold value ( alpha max) for the combined power parameter ( alpha ), comparing the combined power parameter ( alpha ) against the threshold value ( alpha max) to obtain either of a first and a second comparison result, whereby transmitted bursts are detected in the case of said first comparison result ( alpha < alpha max) and no transmitted bursts are detected in the case of said second comparison result ( alpha > alpha max).
