A method of reducing packet congestion at a network node in a packet-switched data communication network, which method comprises the steps of: <SL> <LI>(1) receiving an indication of congestion at said network node caused by a queue of packets awaiting processing at said network node; and <LI>(2) marking one or more packets in said queue in response to said indication, wherein a probability of marking a packet in the queue is higher for a first proportion of the packets than for a second proportion of the packets, one or more packets of said first proportion having spent less time on said network than one or more packets of said second proportion. </SL> This method is based on Random Early Detection (RED). This method distinguishes between packet flows having long Round Trip Times (RTT) and those with short RTT. Packet flows having long RTT are more susceptible to packet loss. (Mobile Internet use tends to require long RTT.). |
