A damper 14 comprises a housing 16 having a cylindrical hollow shape and filled with a viscous fluid. First 30 and second 20 coaxial rotors are rotatably retained in the housing provided with first 32 and second 24 connecting portions respectively. When the first and second connecting portions engage, allowing the first and second rotors to rotate together, the viscous fluid generates fluid resistance to apply a braking force. When a space is formed between the first and second connecting portions, allowing viscous fluid to pass therethrough, the flow resistance, and hence the braking force is reduced. An elastic member, coil spring 36, is disposed in the housing for urging the first and second rotors in a direction so that the connecting portions engage. The elastic member accumulates energy when the first and second connecting portions are moved away from each other such that it supplies a restoring force. The damper may ideally be used on the hinge of a mobile phone. |
