PURPOSE: Gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase and a gene encoding the same are provided, thereby increasing glutathione synthesis, heavy metal resistance and cell proliferation when the enzyme is introduced into a glutathione synthesis-deficient mutant. CONSTITUTION: The gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase derived from Hansenula polymorpha has the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 3. The gene encoding the gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase has the nucleotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 4. The genomic DNA containing a promoter and the gene of the gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase derived from Hansenula polymorpha has the nucleotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 1. The promoter of the gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase derived from Hansenula polymorpha has the nucleotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 2. An expression vector pG24 containing the gene of SEQ ID NO: 4 is provided. A transformant E. coli DH5α/pG24(KCTC 10370BP) is produced by transforming E. coli DH5α with the expression vector pG24.
