PURPOSE: A motion estimation method is provided to effectively carry out motion estimation between frames using a small quantity of calculations and minimized hardware overhead. CONSTITUTION: An optimum motion vector of full-pel location of the current macro block is decided(501). A linear combined vector of motion vector information of macro blocks that have been encoded among macro blocks adjacent to the current macro block is calculated(502). The optimum motion vector of the full-pel location of the current macro block is compared to the linear combined vector to decide an optimum candidate vector whose actual distortion will be calculated from eight candidate vectors of a half-pel location(503). A distortion of the optimum motion vector of the full-pel region is compared to the actual distortion of m candidate vectors of the half-pel location to finally decide the motion vector having the smallest distortion as the motion vector of the current macro block(504). |
