PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a recording/reproducing device to be decided whether it is normal or special reproduction even for an external signal and to select a circuit constant or a filter for signal processing. SOLUTION: A composite signal 31 having a threshold level adjusted to a synchronization level is input to a comparator 11, and is separated into a video signal 32 and a synchronization signal 33. The separated synchronization signal 33 is input to an integrator 13 for integration and is separated as a vertical synchronization signal 35. The separated vertical synchronization signal 35 is input to a counter 14, where the number of such vertical synchronization signals is counted. The counted number is input to a system microcomputer 15 as a vertical synchronization count value 36. The microcomputer 15 can decide nomal or special reproduction in a very simple manner on the basis of the number of vertical synchronization signals per unit time. On the basis of the decided result, the microcomputer 15 sets parameters to realize an optimum condition for each reproduction. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
