PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimize the shape of illumination light in a light valve in a display device having an illumination system providing one or more illumination light scanning on the light valve. SOLUTION: The projection type display device has a luminous flux shaping plate provided with a slit S1 which shapes the shape of a luminous flux separated into three primary colors at every color. Each luminous flux passing through the slit S1 is scrolled by a rotation prism and allows the image to be formed on the light valve. The shape of the slit S1 of the luminous flux shaping section is designed in consideration of influence due to an optical system from the slit S1 to the light valve so as to optimize the shape of image-forming light flux in the light valve. In order to design the shape of the slit S1, the evaluation of distortion of the optical system from the slit S1 to the light valve is used, with respect to the shape of the objective image-forming light flux on the light valve, a calculation is performed by using the evaluated distortion and, thereby, the shape of the slit S1 is determined.
