The production of a quartz glass blank comprises feeding a starting component containing a fuel gas and silicon to a deposition burner arranged within a reaction chamber delimited by a chamber wall (29), converting to SiO2 particles in a burner flame (16) by flame hydrolysis, and depositing on a rotating support (14) in layers to form a SiO2 blank. A protective gas stream (28) surrounding the burner flame is produced. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) the production of a blank for optical fibers; and (2) a device for carrying out the process.
