PURPOSE: A belt element for a continuously variable transmission is provided to improve the durability by preventing wear of the element and noise in driving with minimizing the contact area between plural elements, to control shifting conveniently by minimizing centrifugal force with reducing the weight of the element, and to cool efficiently by flowing lubricant actively with forming the gap between the elements. CONSTITUTION: A belt element(28) for a continuously variable transmission is composed of a triangular head part(32) protruding a lug(36) forward and forming an insertion groove(40) in the rear part; a body part(34) integrally formed in the lower part of the head part; and a contact part(38) protruded from the front of the body part. The groove is formed between the head part and the body part, and a steel band is inserted to the groove. Plural elements are connected with the steel band to transmit power. The lug and the contact part of the element are contacted to the rear part of the other belt element to form the clearance between the belt elements.
