PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital video signal transmission system or the like for reducing a deterioration in image quality of SDTV signals in the case of mapping two SDTV signals on an HDTV screen image and transmitting the resulting signal through an MPEG compression process.

SOLUTION: In mapping two SDTV sources A, B on the HDTV image screen, the sources A, B are vertically arranged and extended in a horizontal direction. It is known that the MPEG system generates a failure in the screen image from detailed part (high frequency component) of the screen image at compression. When the SDTV sources are extended on the screen image in the horizontal direction and mapped thereon, since the high frequency component is suppressed, the deterioration caused by the compression process of the MPEG system can be reduced.
