A lathe or like machine tool has the carriage supported by a bed with an unsymmetrical inverted V-guide, of which the more steeplyinclined surface is on the side towards the work and serves as the main guide surface, a further flat-guide being provided with its surface parallel to the less steeply-inclined front surface of the first guide. A rib or support 26 of the lathe-bed has a steeply-inclined main guidesurface 32 and a front-surface 33 less steeplyinclined. These two surfaces constitute an inverted unsymmetrical V-form and, together with a flat surface 35 on a further rib 27, support the lathe-carriage 30. The surface 35 is parallel with the front support-surface 33. Adjusting wedges or gibs are provided at 34 and an overhanging lip 36 on the rear of the carriage engages underneath the rear edge of the guide-surface 35. A tailstock 31 is arranged on similar guideways on ribs 28, 29, and on the rib edge of the rib carrying the guide-surface 35. The tailstock may be clamped by a wedge 41 and is arranged to slide past the carriage 30. In a modification the rib 28 is omitted. Racks for the feed of the carriage and tailstock are arranged in approximate central positions for the carriage and tailstock at 38 and 44 respectively. An additional carriage of similar construction to the carriage 30 may run along the back of the bed. A cross-slide 45 carries a longitudinally-adjustable toolholder 47 which is provided with guideways of similar configuration to those provided for the carriage 30. Discharge shafts 11, 12 are provided between the front and rear guide ribs respectively, to carry away the cuttings. |
