PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material having negativeΔεand lowering liquid crystal phase lower limit temperature without lowering the absolute value of theΔε, to provide a liquid crystal composition containing the same, having negativeΔεand wide in service temperature range, and to provide a liquid crystal display device using the composition, having high display grade. SOLUTION: The compound having 1,2-propanediyl group as linkage group is represented by general formula(I). The liquid crystal composition comprises the compound and another specific compound with negative dielectric constant anisotropy, having negativeΔεwith its absolute value being≥1.
