Producing a micro array with a number of wells (10), the substrate (12) is of a material which can swell. A protective layer (14) is deposited on the substrate, in the pattern of the wells (10), and toluene vapor (13) is applied to swell the substrate material and form the well recesses within the swollen substrate. The well recesses are sealed by over swelling.
