PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heart holder for coronary artery by-pass operation, for lifting the heart and holding the reversed state for operation in which the wall surface of the heart is negatively sucked with the heart still in the state of pulsation in the coronary artery by-pass operation using an artificial blood vessel. SOLUTION: This heart retention device includes: a heart holder body 1 formed in the shape of substantially conforming with the cardial apex section of the heart and the surface of its vicinity, and opened in the vicinity of the coronary artery; a plurality of recessed grooves 2 cut in the inner wall of the heart holder body; and a support part 4 extended to a suction system 3 connected to the plurality of recessed grooves and the heart holder body. A soft elastomer 5 having flexibility substantially equal to the flexibility of the surface of the heart is attached to the inside of the heart holder body and the vicinity of the edge, and further the heart holder body is formed of shape memory plastic whose deformation temperature is set to about 50°C.
