PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide chain-shaped metal powder with a shape of a straight chain or a shape almost similar thereto reduced in branching and bending, and to provide a method and an apparatus for producing the chain-shaped metal powder. SOLUTION: In the production method, a reducing precipitation reaction where, in an aqueous solution comprising the ions of metal having paramagnetism, the ions of the metal are reduced by the action of a reducing agent, and are precipitated as fine metal particles is performed in the presence of a magnetic field by a magnet, so that the metal powder is connected so as to be a chain shape while forcedly arranging the same in the direction of a magnetic line of force to produce the chain-shaped metal powder. The production device is provided with a reaction tank 2 for performing the reducing precipitation reaction, and the electromagnet 1 for applying a magnetic field to the reaction tank 2. The chain-shaped metal powder is produced by the above production method, and also, the length L of the chain is prescribed to 0.5 to 100μm, the diameter D of the chain to 20 to 500 nm, and the aspect ratio L/D to the range of 10 to 1,000.
