PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator apparatus capable of preventing a worker from falling and capable of eliminating a shock absorbing means installed on the ceiling of a hoistway to reduce cost. SOLUTION: This elevator apparatus comprises a handrail 21 vertically installed on the roof part 7 of a car 1 and preventing the worker from falling and allowing a specified distance to be kept between the upper part of the car 1 and an obstacle when the car 1 is collided with the obstacle by over-running during rising. The handrail 21 comprises a shock absorbing means 22 which retracts with a specified elastic force in a direction opposite to an impact direction in a collision to relieve the impact.
