A method and apparatus for cathodic current optimization measures drill stem resistances along a well hole (14) during its drilling utilizing a resistance meter (11) connected by conductor (17) to the drilling rig (12) and by conductor (18) to a distant grounding system (16), correlates the drill stem resistances to respective types of underground formations at corresponding predetermine spaced positions along the well bore (14), predicts a respective position of at least one anodic area on a well casing to be installed and determines an amount of cathodic current to be applied thereto.
