A formation fluid sampling and hydraulic testing tool for a drilling apparatus that includes a drilling string comprised of a drilling pipe and drilling bit is provided. The tool has an outer tub (30) disposed between the drilling pipe (23) and the drilling bit (25). The outer tube is provided with a plurality of through holes (31) for receiving formation fluid into the outer tube (30). An inner tube (36) is disposed within, and spaced from, the outer tube (30) to form an annular space (37) between them. The inner tube is provided with a plurality of through holes (54) that are adapted to communicate with the annular space (37).One end of the inner tube is connectable to a pumping mechanism (59) for drawing formation fluid through the through holes (31, 54) of the outer tube and of the inner tube (36) for the purpose of collecting a sample of the fluid and imposing a hydraulic stress on the formation. The through holes (54) of the inner tube (36) can be closed off or released. Valves (50, 49) are provide for establishing or 'closing.off fluid communication between the interior of the inner tube (36) and the open ends of the outer tube (30). Also provided is a drilling apparatus that includes the formation fluid sampling and hydraulic testing tool (20), that comprises from top to bottom a pressure reduction valve (84), an expandible and collapsible packer bladder assembly (72), as disposed between the drilling pipe (23) and the drilling bit (25). Associated with the packer assemblies are pressure and vacuum storage devices (78, 79) for inflation and deflation respectfully of the bladders (75, 76) of the packer assemblies (72, 74). |
